Ayushman Bharat Insurance Scheme has now expanded to include individuals over 70, fulfilling a major campaign promise from Modi 3.0.

1. The cabinet has taken a significant step towards improving geriatric care in India by approving universal health coverage for senior citizens. On Wednesday, it was announced that individuals aged 70 and above, regardless of their income, will be included under the flagship Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initially revealed the expansion of health insurance for senior citizens aged 70 and older in April.

 

Coverage Details: This initiative offers free health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year on a family basis, benefiting approximately 4.5 crore families and 6 crore senior citizens.

New AB PM-JAY Cards: Eligible seniors will receive a new, specialized card under the AB PM-JAY scheme.

Enhanced Coverage for Seniors: Those aged 70 and above who are already enrolled in AB PM-JAY will receive an additional top-up of up to ₹25 lakh per year.

Health Insurance Options: Seniors aged 70 and above currently enrolled in other public health insurance schemes can choose to retain their existing plan or transition to AB PM-JAY.

 

This initiative aims to provide free health insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh per family to around 4.5 crore families, benefiting approximately 6 crore senior citizens.

 

All senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their socio-economic background, will be eligible for the benefits of AB PM-JAY. Eligible seniors will be issued a new distinct card under the scheme. Those aged 70 and above from families already covered under AB PM-JAY will receive an additional top-up coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year,” stated a government press release.

 

Senior citizens aged 70 and above will be entitled to health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year on a family basis. Those already enrolled in other public health insurance schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme will have the option to maintain their current coverage or switch to AB PM-JAY.
